Mission

Create a document of “unseen” responses, reactions and reflections to the isolating months during the Covid-19 pandemic. Connect and expand community through creative collaboration, and bring new perspectives to light. Find contributors from as many cities and countries as possible, underscoring the global nature of this experience.

Challenge

Edit and design a full-color book of 63 creative contributors from more than eleven countries, documenting their creative projects in response to the isolating months of the Covid-19 pandemic. Find ways to include all mediums, including writing, image, painting, sculpture, sound and video.

Process

Connect and Collect

Design and solicit social media ‘open call’ requests for contributions. Gather and organize all information pertaining to the contributors, including creative projects of various mediums.

Typography

During the global crisis, as individuals found themselves confined to their homes, they turned to digital platforms as a means to connect and communicate. I selected the Roboto typeface for its clear readability and diverse range of font weights. Its structured design provides a reassuring sense of organization, while its rounded shapes offer a welcoming touch, setting it apart from other fonts in its class.

In this virtual realm, Roboto’s adaptability across a spectrum of devices—from smartwatches to tablets—played a pivotal role. Designed by Google with this versatility in mind back in 2011, these very devices served as lifelines, bridging the gap and fostering connections during prolonged periods of isolation.

Cover

Selected cover sketches and final design:

On the cover, you’ll find a series of three repeating, slightly misaligned fields portraying a pixelated blue and white sky––a nod to our ever-evolving digital world. We opted for an image of the sky because it symbolically brings our diverse nations together, reminding us of our shared place on this beautiful planet. The subtle misalignment of images serves to convey the fluidity of time, both compressing and expanding, while the repetition highlights the banality of routine.
