Mission
Context Art Space located just outside of Industry City in Brooklyn is an artist-run gallery and publishing platform with the aim of showing the artwork of under-represented, emerging artists.
Challenge
Create a curated collection of drawings and design a zine-style catalog to highlight some of the images from the gallery exhibition. The final result is an 8.5 x 5.5 inch, 20-page black and white print publication.
The catalog, titled Raccoon, is named in honor of a resilient nocturnal creature that faced a challenging experience at the artist’s former home in Indiana. It will not only showcase the artists’s captivating black and white drawings but also share the inspiring story of the raccoon’s remarkable journey.
Process
Collect and Curate
The artist generously provided an extensive collection of images, which I organized into two groups. From there, I selected a few drawings for full-page displays, several for quarter-page spreads, and a 2-page grid for the final layout.
Typography
Helvetica, with its modernity, simplicity and minimalism, proved to be the perfect complement to the highly detailed and uniquely handmade drawings and paintings.
Cover
The cover had to capture both the essence of the drawings and the story behind their creation. I envisioned the artist emerging from the drawings, much like the raccoon character in the story, emerges from the home.
It was a delightful discovery to wrap the text around the drawing, which really brought the concept to life.
Outcome
Final Book
